Design your own stuff

A friend of mine sent me a link today for Ponoko and I needed to share it right away. This is a site where you can design your own stuff. It is crazy! You make your 2D or 3D design in one of the approved design programs and send it off to Ponoko to get made. They have various materials to choose from and can laser cut too. You can make your own jewelry, puzzles, furniture and more. Some people have already designed some cool things and they are giving away the design files. Then, you can choose your material and buy them.

Also, if you have an idea about a product and you want to make a prototype, this is perfect. I am so impressed with this process.

Photo of the day - Zhang Peng

zhangpeng.jpg

Zhang Peng is an up and coming Chinese photographer. Her work is interesting to me because it speaks to Chinese culture, especially from a woman’s point of view.

She has selected photography for sale at artnet. There is also one article on Arts Fair International where she describes her use of photography and she talks about the meaning behind this series of photographs. In this article, Zhang uses this line to describe her work, “What lies beneath the beauty and magnificence is endless pain that no one ever knows.”

If I share an artist’s work on my blog that I would like people to be aware of, it is important to note that all the artwork, including photography, is the copyright of the artist. If said artist sees their work on this blog and wants it removed, please contact me and I will remove it immediately.

The White Stripes version of Lomography Cameras

whitestripes.jpg

Check out these wonderful, limited edition lomography cameras from The White Stripes. Lomography cameras are really for everyday snapshots. They create imperfect images, often blurring or over-saturating the colors in the image. It is a really cool and whimsical form of photography. On The White Stripes website, you can see a gallery of images taken with each camera as well a gallery of shots taken by fans.

Also, if you want to know more about lomography, there is a website dedicated to this art - The Lomographic Society International. This is a fun site with lots of photos.

Trend spotting and the future of marketing

Today, I updated the Business & Marketing links in the right column to include some additional trend spotting sites that I think are important to note.

With the changing landscape of marketing, keeping up with the global culture shifts can be overwhelming. Last week, I talked about “New Marketing” which focuses on cultural insights, sustainability, responsibility and innovation. Because of this trend, new types of design and marketing firms are popping up all over the globe.

One major player in this organization of thought is PSFK. Recently, the PSFK Conference was held in New York and Alan Chochinov from Core77 spoke about this issue.
